The Circle of the Judges - Ch. 6-8

Overview:

Judges 6-8 tells the story of Gideon, an unlikely hero who is called by God to lead the Israelites in battle against the Midianites. In chapter 6, Gideon is visited by an angel of the Lord, who tells him that he has been chosen to save Israel. Gideon is initially hesitant, but after multiple signs from God, he raises an army of 32,000 men.

However, God tells Gideon that his army is too large, and he needs to reduce the number of soldiers. Gideon follows God's instructions and whittles his army down to just 300 men. With this small force, Gideon is able to defeat the Midianites and deliver Israel from their oppression.

Noteworthy Elements:

  1. Gideon's reluctance: Gideon is initially hesitant to accept God's call to lead the Israelites, and asks for multiple signs to confirm that he is the chosen one.

  2. The reduction of Gideon's army: God instructs Gideon to reduce his army from 32,000 men to just 300. This demonstrates that victory comes not from strength in numbers, but from trust in God.

  3. The fleece test: Gideon puts out a fleece of wool and asks God to give him a sign by making the fleece wet while the ground around it stays dry. He then reverses the test, asking for the fleece to stay dry while the ground around it is wet.

  4. Gideon's victory: Despite being vastly outnumbered, Gideon and his 300 men are able to defeat the Midianites through clever tactics and God's intervention.

  5. Gideon's downfall: After his victory, Gideon makes a golden ephod (a type of garment) and sets it up as an object of worship. This idolatry ultimately leads to Israel's downfall.
